Focusing on various aspects of making space — such as designing and creating, constructing, or adapting areas for anatomical studies, like provisional rooms or specifically built theatres — this presentation aims to analyze the spatial and institutional dynamics of anatomical studies within early modern hospital complexes in Spain.
Through examining case studies from Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid, this talk explores how anatomical and surgical practices were deeply entangled within religious, social, and political frameworks. Furthermore, it highlights the complex and reciprocal interconnections between scientific knowledge, medical practice, and architecture: Which institutional, infrastructural and architectural requirements enabled dissections and public demonstrations to take place within the hospital setting?
Lastly, the analysis strives to visualize a topography of knowledge within hospital enclosures in the Iberian Peninsula: How did anatomical studies and the actors involved coexist in these multifunctional “ecosystems,” in spaces between healthcare, technical skills, and scientific knowledge?
