The Anatomical Theatre as a Room of Knowledge and Community Building: The Example of Frankfurt’s Senckenberg Anatomical Theatre
Anatomical theatres became very popular in the early modern period. The performative section of bodies was a spectacle not only for the attending medical students but also the public. While Frankfurt’s anatomical theatre by Johann Christian Senckenberg wasn’t one of the earliest examples of its type, it stands out because it was not associated with a university but a hospital. What difference did this make and what impact did Senckenberg and his foundation have?
